Santa Cruz celebrates the world of cinema and film music with FIMUCITÉ’s Summer Cinema

- The Summer Cinema brings free screenings of ‘The Wild Robot’, ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ and ‘Hugo’ to Residencial Anaga’s Plaza from Friday to Sunday.

The Tenerife Film Music Festival (FIMUCITE) is once again bringing audiences its traditional event the ‘Summer Cinema’, in collaboration with the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council via the Centro-Ifara District. This free event will transform the Plaza of Residencial Anaga into a large open-air cinema from 3rd - 6th July. The initiative forms part of the festival’s 20th-anniversary programme and will feature four screenings suitable for the whole family.

In the words of Diego Navarro, founder and director of FIMUCITÉ: “Our summer cinema has become one of the festival’s most popular and much-loved side events. We want to highlight the importance of music in cinema, in any audiovisual work. The programme allows audiences to enjoy great films that share a common thread: extraordinary soundtracks. The films in this year’s line-up will delight families keen to enjoy the experience in the open air, in such a special year as this, when we are celebrating our 20th anniversary.

The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, emphasises that “We want culture to reach every neighbourhood and for public spaces to become meeting places for families. This film series allows people to enjoy cinema in the open air and brings local residents closer to the celebrations marking the twentieth anniversary of Fimucité, one of the most important cultural festivals in the Canary Islands”.

Bermúdez adds that “These films also share a very special common feature: their soundtracks. Music is an essential part of cinema, and Fimucité has been showcasing the work of composers who have moved audiences on the big screen for over two decades”.

For her part, the councillor for the Centro-Ifara District, Purificación Dávila, points out that “We continue to promote high-quality cultural activities in our neighbourhoods so that residents of all ages can enjoy them without having to travel. The summer cinema is an initiative designed for families to enjoy together and to bring our public spaces to life on summer evenings”.

Dávila adds that “For three days, Residencial Anaga will once again become a meeting place for children, young people and adults. We want families to enjoy a different kind of experience that is free and accessible to all.”

The programme kicks off this Friday at 20.00 pm with a screening of ‘Wild Robot’, one of the most notable animated films of recent years. Based on the novel by Peter Brown, it tells the story of a robot who learns to live alongside the animals on an island. The film’s soundtrack was composed by Kris Bowers, a multiple award-winner for his work in film and television. The music accompanies the protagonist’s emotional journey and reinforces the message of living in harmony with nature.

On Saturday, also at 20.00 pm, the programme continues with a screening of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, an animated adventure that tells the story of the friendship between a young Viking and a dragon. The popular film is remembered in large part for John Powell’s soundtrack, which is considered one of the most popular scores in animated cinema. Its themes combine adventure, emotion and epic grandeur, making it a firm favourite for millions of viewers.

On Sunday 5 July, at 19.00 pm, there will be a screening of ‘Hugo’, directed by Martin Scorsese. The story pays tribute to the early years of cinema through the eyes of a boy who lives in a Parisian railway station. The music was composed by Howard Shore, a composer known for his work on major international productions. His score brings a sense of sensitivity to the film and recreates the atmosphere of 1930s Paris.

This year, the Tenerife International Film Music Festival is celebrating two decades as one of Europe’s leading events dedicated to film music. Over the course of these twenty years, it has brought together in Tenerife some of the most prominent composers, performers and professionals on the international scene, introducing audiences to the artistic value of film soundtracks and their role in filmmaking.
