FIMUCITÉ promotes inclusivity through its inclusive musical workshops ‘Todos Sumamos’

 - On June 17th & 19th, the Tenerife International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ) organised two socio-educational programmes entitled United Together: music as a tool for social inclusion, which were run by Gonzalo de Araoz.
 - The initiative, developed in association with the Social Policies Department of the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, used rhythm, body percussion, musical games, and creative activities in groups to boost self esteem, participation, and a sense of belonging in vulnerable children.

Last week, the Tenerife International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ) organised a new socio-educational initiative in the form of two workshops entitled United Together: music as a tool for social inclusion. Its original title in Spanish being Todos Sumamos. La música como herramienta de inclusión social para la infancia. The programme aimed to help vulnerable children build confidence through music, which serves as a channel to encourage integration, participation and personal growth.

The workshops were held on June 17th & 19th in the venue Casa de la Juventud Lázaro Siliuto located in El Toscal. Organised in collaboration with the Social Policies Department of the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, both workshops provided participating children a safe space in which they could enjoy interacting with other children, express their inner creativity, and develop a sense of belonging through a methodology based on shared experiences and the exploration of creativity through group activities.

The workshops, which were run by the musician Gonzalo de Araoz under the supervision of a trained psychologist, were designed and developed by experts over a two-year period. De Araoz has extensive experience running team-building workshops for private enterprises, and also applies this expertise to the socio-educational sphere using a methodology adapted to children that focuses on emotional well-being and building cohesion in groups.

The programme was designed for children aged between 3 - 15 years old who receive support from social exclusion prevention programs. The children were accompanied by youth support workers from Aldeas Infantiles and from the Servicio de Día de la Asociación Don Bosco. Through activities based on rhythm, body percussion, musical games and creative exploration activities in groups, the participants worked on developing skills such as active listening, cooperation, mutual respect, trust and interpersonal communication. No prior knowledge of music was required.

The Todos Sumamos workshops were designed not to be grounded in a traditionally academic approach, but rather as a sensory experience in which all contributions were valid, and in which the achievements of all the participants were built as a group.

The Tenerife International Film Music Festival will be celebrating its eagerly awaited 20th anniversary edition from July 3rd - 19th with a wide range of concerts and parallel events that will be held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristóbal de La Laguna and also in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The Tenerife International Film Music Festival is supported by its main sponsor, Turismo de Tenerife, under the Cabildo de Tenerife, with additional support from the island’s Department of Culture. The festival is also sponsored by the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council and the Canary Islands Institute for Cultural Development of the Government of the Canary Islands, and the City Council of La Laguna. FIMUCITÉ extends its gratitude to the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra (OST), the Auditorio de Tenerife, and its many public and private partners for their continued support.
