- The Festival Internacional de Música de Cine de Tenerife is celebrating the resounding success of its first concerts and concluding rehearsals for the concerts scheduled for this Friday and Saturday at the Auditorio de Tenerife.
- Film producer, screenwriter and director Juanma Bajo Ulloa will visit the Festival to receive the Spanish Audiovisual Music Award for Best Original Score, as awarded by Musimagen to the score for his film ´Baby´, composed by Koldo Uriarte and Bingen Mendizábal.
The Festival Internacional de Música de Cine de Tenerife (FIMUCITÉ), a global reference in its field, which is currently celebrating its 15th edition under the direction of renowned composer and orchestral conductor Diego Navarro and with the support of Cabildo de Tenerife, Gobierno de Canarias, Ayuntamiento de San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Auditorio de Tenerife and Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife, its heading for its final stretch.
Tonight, in the exconvento de Santo Domingo, in La Laguna, the tribute concert to Antón García Abril (1933-2021), one of the greatest musical creators of the 20th Century, and linked to FIMUCITÉ since its inception, will take place. It will be a one-off concert, performed by the Coro Polifónico de la Universidad de La Laguna with Julio Chinea Pedraza as choirmaster, in which, as a World Premiere and for the first time offscreen, an extraordinary selection of his most iconic scores will be heard, thanks to the work of composer, arranger and orchestrator Jorge Magaz, with the collaboration of Miguel Ángel Órdoñez and Julio Chinea. The repertoire will begin with a tribute to screenwriter and film director Mario Camus, who passed away last weekend, with the performance of García Abril´s music for two of his emblematic films, ‘Los camioneros’ and ‘La colmena’.
We will also hear the scores of other key titles in Spanish cinema, such as ‘Sor Citroen’ or ‘El crimen de Cuenca’, as well as those of series like ‘Fortunata y Jacinta’, ‘Ramón y Cajal’, ‘Anillos de Oro’ or ‘El Hombre y la Tierra’, by Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente.
‘Once Upon Ennio Morricone: A tribute to His Film Music’
After that concert, Friday and Saturday will take the programme to the Auditorio de Tenerife for the staging of both scheduled performances of the concert ‘Once Upon Ennio Morricone: A Tribute to His Film Music’. FIMUCITÉ director Diego Navarro will conduct the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife to pay tribute to the Italian composer, who wrote over 500 scores and who, after five previous nominations, won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for Quentin Tarantino´s 'The Hateful Eight' (2016).
FIMUCITÉ, in coproduction with the European Film Philharmonic Institute, has prepared an extraordinary musical production to remember the key works in his filmography and take us on a moving journey through the legacy of the legendary author of unforgettabe film scores such as ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’, ‘Cinema Paradiso’, ‘The Untouchables’, ‘The Mission’ or ‘Novecento’. The Sinfónica de Tenerife will be accompanied onstage by the Tenerife Film Choir, led by Juan Ramón Vinagre, saxophonist Kike Perdomo, Gonzalo de Araoz (guitars) and prestigious soprano Carmen Acosta.
This concert will be recorded by Radiotelevisión Canaria for its subsequent broadcast on the autonomous network.
Both performances will feature the same Morricone repertoire, however, on the performance on Friday, the 24th of September, the audience will also be able to enjoy the performance of the winning scores for the 4th Spanish Audiovisual Music Awards as awarded by the Asociación de Compositores de Música para Audiovisual (Musimagen).
For the fourth year running, FIMUCITÉ will host the ceremony for these awards that, in this edition, are being presented to Koldo Uriarte and Bingen Mendizábal, in the category for Best Original Orchestral Score, which they composed for the film ‘Baby’, by Juanma Bajo Ulloa. The Basque producer, screenwriter and director, who won the Goya Award for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay in 1992 for ‘Butterfly Wings’, will receive the award in the Auditorio de Tenerife, accompanied by composer Koldo Uriarte and actress Natalia Ruíz.
The award for Best Original Electroacoustic Score goes to Darío Palomo, for his work on the documentary ‘Emilio Herrera’. The award for Best Original Score for Series goes to Sergio Jiménez Lacima, for ‘El Desafío: ETA’. Finally, the award to Best Original Score for Advertising goes to Daniel Trujillo, for ‘Allianz’.
“Las Chicas del Coro”
On Sunday, the 26th of September, at 12:00 noon, the Espacio Cultural La Granja de Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host a second performance of the concert “Las Chicas del Coro”, performed by the Coro de Voces Blancas del Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Tenerife, an extraordinary group of women aged from 15 and 23, with Juan Ramón Vinagre as choirmaster.
This concert, which includes scores such as ‘La Vita e bella’, ‘Casablanca’, ‘Frozen’, ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘La La Land’ or ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’, with special choral arrangements prepared exclusively for the concert, is inclusive and accesible for people with physical disabilities and/or dependent on care, thanks to the collaboration of associations Apanate and Acufade.
Closing Ceremony
The Festival´s Closing Ceremony will take place on Sunday evening in Espacio Cultural La Granja with the announcement of the winners and the awards ceremony for FIMUCINEMA, FIMUCITÉs Official Competition Section, whose screening programme continues this Thursday and Friday with standout offerings such as feature film 'Come Niente' or documentary 'Paraíso en llamas', as well as a selection of competing short films.
