The Tenerife International Film Music Festival is celebrating its twelfth edition this year from September 21st – 30th. As part of its celebrations it will be awarding the FIMUCITÉ – Antón García Abril Award to the celebrated actress Concha Velasco for her important role in performing emblematic songs from iconic Spanish soundtracks, and also for her work in supporting and sharing national cinematography as a TV presenter on the show ‘Cine de Barrio’ broadcasted for Televisión Española.
The award is presenting as part of the concert ‘Cine de Barrio en Concierto’, an original proposal that arose from the close cooperation between FIMUCITÉ and the broadcaster Radio Televisión Española. A hugely talented group of Canarian musicians will be performing versions of iconic songs, like ‘La chica ye-yé’ from the film ‘Historias de la televisión’, or the song ‘¡Mamá quiero ser artista!’ from the feature film of the same name. The songs performed come from a whole range of different Spanish films starring artists such as Lola Flores, Marisol, Joselito, Antonio Molina, Rocío Dúrcal, Raphael or even Concha Velasco herself.

The concert ‘Cine de Barrio en Concierto’ will be under the musical direction of pianist David Quevedo, who provides the exclusive musical arrangements for the evening’s performance by redefining the classics from iconic Spanish films. Performing on stage will be soloists Esther Ovejero and Fran León. The concert will be held at the Teatro Guimerá in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on Sunday 23rd September at 19:00.

The twelfth edition of the Tenerife International Film Music Festival, which is sponsored by the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, the Canary Islands Government, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council will also be paying posthumous homage to the composers Joe Harnell and Jóhann Jóhannsson.

Harnell, who passed away in 2005 aged 80, began his career as a pianist in the world of pop and jazz music. In 1963, he had a smashing hit with his arrangement for "Fly Me to the Moon", winning a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. At 49 years old, Harnell moved to Hollywood to begin working as a film and TV composer, participating in series such as ‘The Bionic Woman’, ‘The Incredible Hulk’ and ‘V’, which earned him an Emmy nomination in 1983. In a world premiere, the latter will be performed in the form of a suite for orchestra and choir that has been especially arranged for FIMUCITÉ and for the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife. The suite will be performed in the Closing Gala of the festival on Saturday 29th September in the Auditorio de Tenerife ‘Adán Martín’. The theme of this year’s festival is the science fiction subgenre of U.F.O contact and alien invasions, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of one of the most important shows of this genre, the TV series ‘The X Files’.

Jóhann Jóhannsson passed away in February of this year, just a the age of 49. He was nominee for the Oscar by his scores for ‘Sicario’ (2015) and ‘The Theory of Everything (2014), the latter awarded with a Golden Globe. His score for the science fiction film ‘Arrival’ is one of his other most celebrated works. Pieces from this score in another world premiere will be performed in the Closing Gala of FIMUCITÉ XII as part of the evening’s events.

The concert programming for FIMUCITÉ, covering a total of 9 proposals, will be complemented by a range of parallel activities, including the third edition of the FIMUCITÉ Film Scoring Academy (Academia FIMUCITÉ para Compositores Audiovisuales), and the screening of films as part of the sixth edition of the FIMUCINEMA competition. The Film Scoring academy will run its training activities on the 26th, 27th & 28th September.

Eight short films from the MICA film festival (Muestra Internacional de Cine Astronómico) will be added to the previously announced FIMUCINEMA film catalogue. These can be seen at 20.00 this Friday 21st September in the Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos in La Laguna. Bonded by a shared fascination with the wonders of outer space and the links between film and music that reverberate through their activities, FIMUCITÉ and MICA have started a special relationship that has laid down synergies between these two important cultural events in the islands. The selection includes the short films ‘Eusebio80’ (winner of the MICA Public Choice Award) and ‘Bendito Machine’ (winner of the MICA Critics’ Choice Award). The session is completed by ‘Origines’, ‘The Jump”, ‘La habitación de las estrellas’, ‘Caronte’, ‘Space Mountain’ and ‘¿Ves cómo se mezcla todo?’.

The twelfth edition of the Tenerife International Film Music Festival, which will run from 21st – 30th September, 2018 has been made possible thanks to the support and sponsorship of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, the Canary Islands Government, Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, the companies AUDI, Dorada Especial, & Teleférico del Teide, and the collaboration of SGAE – the Spanish General Society of Authors and Publishers.
