- A prominent series of master classes offered by professionals of renowned international prestige will be held at the Professional Conservatory of Music from September 26th - 28th, 2018.
The Tenerife International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ) announces the program for one of its most anticipated parallel activities, the FIMUCITÉ Film Scoring Academy (FSA). This year it celebrates its third edition, held on 26th, 27th and 28th of September.
The free educational activities will take place at the main lecture hall of the Professional Conservatory of Music of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (CPM Tenerife) during the festival week. The FSA is sponsored by the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, the Canary Islands Government, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council and participants will receive an official attendance diploma.

Wednesday 26th September
11:00 - ‘Everything you always wanted to know about film scoring (but were afraid to ask)’ by Jean-Michel Bernard (‘The Science of Sleep,’ ‘Be Kind Rewind’). The French composer, official artist of the prestigious piano maker Steinway & Sons, will be joined by his wife to offer the opening concert of FIMUCITÉ 12: ‘Play it again, Jean-Michel’. The piano recital will also be held on the 23rd of September at Teatro Guiniguada in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
15:00 - ‘The director-composer creative process’ by the composer and artistic director of FIMUCITÉ, Diego Navarro. Navarro will be joined by the film directors Enrique Gato and Mar Targarona with whom he collaborated to create the soundtrack for the animated film ‘Capture the Flag’ and ‘El Fotógrafo de Mauthausen’ that premieres on 26th October.
Thursday 27th, September
12:00 - ‘Musical challenges of the documentary genre’ by four time Emmy-winning composer Laura Karpman. Currently a governor of the musical branch of the Hollywood Academy, she is the first woman to ever hold the position. In addition, she composed the popular soundtrack of the cult miniseries ‘Taken’ (2002) produced by Steven Spielberg. Several tracks of ‘Taken’ will be part of the festival’s Closing Gala that takes place on Saturday 29th September in the Adán Martín Auditorium of Tenerife.
15:00 - ‘Reaching your inspirational peaks’ by Christopher’s Young. The masterclass will be introduced by Doreen Ringer-Ross, the Creative Vice-President of the film, television and audiovisual arm of BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.). Young teaches music composition for film at the South California University. His outstanding career in film and television includes hundreds of films, the most celebrated being his scores for films from the fantasy and horror genres. The soundtrack of ‘Species’, one of his most acclaimed works which earned him a Golden Globe nomination, will be performed by the Orquestra Sinfónica de Tenerife as part of the festival’s offers.
Friday 28th, September
12:00 - ‘When two composers are better than one: The creative tandem in film scoring’ by brothers Ben and Nick Foster. Amongst other works, both of them are the musical authors for the animated series ‘Thunderbirds are go!’ that forms part of the Closing Gala’s programme. Ben Foster will be guest conductor for FIMUCITÉ’s Closing Gala.
15:00 - ‘Protect your creation’ by President of Musimagen - Asociación de Compositores de Música para Audiovisual, Darío Palomo. In his masterclass, Palomo will be addressing film composers’ rights. This year, Palomo will also be acting as a jury president for the FIMUCINEMA competition.
The FIMUCITÉ Film Scoring Academy belongs to the educational branch of the festival, as well as the matinee concerts performed for schools. On Thursday September 27th the Antonio Lecuona Auditorium plays host to one such concert - ‘Giants of the Silver Screen’ (‘Colosos de la Gran Pantalla’). The performance will be delivered by the FIMUCITÉ Symphonic Youth Orchestra, which includes young musicians, many of them current students at the Professional Conservatory of Music of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and at the Canary Islands Higher Conservatory of Music. For the third consecutive year, the orchestra is led by maestro José Antonio Cubas. This year’s programme will trace a path through musical masterpieces taken from films exploring cinema’s mythical beasts: ‘King Kong’ and ‘Godzilla’, along with the dinosaurs of ‘Jurassic Park’ or those of ‘The Valley of Gwangi’. A second performance for the general public will take place Sunday 30th September at the Teatro Guimerá in Santa Cruz.
Additionally, at 10:30 on Friday 28th Lydia Kavina will be on stage to offer a concert for students. Kavina is unarguably the world’s most famous Theremin player and the world’s greatest advocate of this musical instrument. Kavina will be joined on stage by the FMF Youth Ensemble, which is formed by Karolina Rumian (violin), Natalia Herman (viola), Gabriela Ślusarczyk (violoncello), Joanna Wicik (piano), Matetuz Wilk (percussion) and Martyna Bachowska (contrabass), within the agreement between FIMUCITÉ and the prestigious Film Music Festival of Krakow. The repertoire will include tracks from ‘Ed Wood’ (Howard Shore), ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ (Danny Elfman), ‘The Mission’ (Ennio Morricone) and classic compositions by authors such as Antonín Dvořák and Serguéi Prokófiev, amongst others. Kavina will also be one of the solo stars performing at FIMUCITÉ’s Closing Gala on 29th September under the baton of Ben Foster.
