Laura Karpman leads the guest composers lineup this Fimucité 12

The presence of Laura Karpman underscores the Tenerife International Film Music Festival’s commitment to increasing the visibility of women who dedicate their professional lives to creating music in the audiovisual sector.

Another confirmed guest of the festival is the composer Ben Foster, who will be guest conductor during the Closing Night Gala of FIMUCITÉ 12. This year, the festival is focused on the subgenre of science fiction dedicated to U.F.O sightings and alien invasions.

Also participating in this year’s festival is composer Jean-Michel Bernard, who regularly collaborates with the filmmaker Michel Gondry.

The Tenerife International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ) is pleased to announce the names of the first confirmed guests of the twelfth edition of the festival, which will run from September 21st – 29th, 2018, thanks to the support and sponsorship of the Cabildo de Tenerife and Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council: composer Ben Foster, who will conduct the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife (OST) in the Closing Night Gala, and composers Laura Karpman, and Jean-Michel Bernard.

The presence of Laura Karpman, who currently serves as a Governor of the Music Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, making her the first women to hold this position, emphasizes the Tenerife International Film Music Festival’s commitment, and the engagement of the festival’s Director, the well-known Tenerife musician Diego Navarro, to increasing the visibility of women who dedicate their professional lives to creating music in the audiovisual sector. FIMUCITÉ is able to boast the previous participation of Lolita Ritmanis, who in 2016 became the first woman to be a guest conductor in the festival, and also Eímear Noone, creator of music for videogames, such as ‘World of Warcraft’. In last year’s festival, Eímear Noone gave us a spectacular performance as she conducted the concert ‘Sword and Sorcery: Symphonic Chronicles of a Legendary Era’.

Laura Karpman is the composer of the soundtrack for the cult science fiction miniseries ‘Taken’ (2002), produced by Steven Spielberg. Several pieces from this miniseries will be performed for audiences during the festival’s Closing Night Gala. Over the course of her extensive career she has won four Emmy Awards and she has created music for television, film and also the videogame industry.

On Saturday September 29th, Ben Foster will conduct the Closing Night Gala, which is entitled ‘The Truth Is Out There’. During the night’s events he will offer audiences a tour through the most iconic scores from the science fiction subgenre dedicated to U.F.O sightings and alien invasions. The programme will include the soundtracks from films such as ‘Mars Attacks’ (1996, music composed by Danny Elfman), ‘Contact’ (1997, Alan Silvestri), ‘The Abyss’ (1989, Alan Silvestri), ‘Starman” (1989, Jack Nietzche), ‘The Thing (1982, Ennio Morricone) and ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’; a modern remake of the series containing the popular & well-known characters from the original which is now being broadcasted on TV, and which includes scores written by Foster and his brother Nick, for which both received BAFTA Award nominations.

Foster is also well know for his work in ‘Dr Who’, having orchestrated and conducted the soundtrack of the popular series for a decade, and also, together with Murray Gold, for being the author of the music of ‘Torchwood’, a spin-off of ‘Dr Who’.

Jean-Michel Bernard will open FIMUCITÉ 12 on Friday September 21st with a piano recital accompanied by the Japanese soloist Kimiko Ono. The concert will be held in the Teatro Leal in La Laguna. Bernard also participated as a guest in FIMUCITÉ 9, performing pieces from the repertoire of his concert 'The French Connection', which was dedicated to the world’s most celebrated French composers. During his professional career, Jean-Michel Bernard’s most notable works include the soundtracks composed for films by Michel Gondry, such as ‘The Science of Sleep’ and ‘Be Kind Rewind’. Also of noteworthy mention are his recent live collaborations with the legendary composer Lalo Schifrin, and the announcement that he has been named official artist to the prestigious piano company Steinway & Sons.

On Friday September 28th at 20:00, as previously announced, the Auditorio de Tenerife will host the European premier of the incredible live-to-picture concert dedicated to the science fiction classic ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ by Steven Spielberg. The concert, conducted by Diego Navarro, will see the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife and the Tenerife Film Choir interpreting the legendary score by John Williams in full while the film is being projected. The Closing Night Gala ‘The Truth Is Out There’ will be held on Saturday September 29th at 19:00, also at the Auditorio de Tenerife.
