A unique opportunity to receive specialised training from world-renown experts in composition for audiovisual media
The second Annual FIMUCITÉ Film Scoring Academy will be held from September 28th – 30th in the Auditorio Antonio Lecuona del Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This event falls under the programme of educational activities organised for the XI Tenerife International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ). The event is aimed at music students and professional musicians who are interested in receiving specialised training. This year, this free event will focus not only on composition for film, but also on composition for the videogame industry. In recent years, musical productions for the gaming industry have gained such prominence that they are now being sold separately, as we also see happening in the case of film soundtracks.
The FIMUCITÉ Film Scoring Academy will be working in collaboration with the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Canary Islands, which will be responsible for endorsing the certificates awarded to course participants, as well as with the support of INtech Tenerife.
At 12:00 on Thursday, September 28th the event will open with the master class “Temp Tracks: Fight or Surrender” taught by Richard Bellis, winner of an Emmy Award for the TV mini-series soundtrack for 'IT' which will be performed as part of the festival’s closing night gala.
At 14:30 on Thursday, September 28th the event continues with the workshop "Best Orchestral Film Scoring When On A Budget", run by music producer James Fitzpatrick, founder of the prestigious record label Tadlow Music. He has more than 30 years experience in the sector, and will be sharing with participants the industry standards demanded of musicians, conductors and composers when making symphonic recordings for the film industry.
At 11:30 on Friday, September 29th the Dutch composer Matthijs Kieboom will be offering a practical master class entitled "Creating Soundtracks With A Small Budget". He will offer a realistic perspective on current opportunities for young composers starting out on their professional careers, and will provide tips on how to make the most of available resources to ensure a professional finish for any final master recording.
At 14:00 on Friday, September 29th, the Polish composer Marcin Przybylowicz will give a conference on composing for videogames. Przybylowicz is co-composer of the video game soundtrack for ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’, which will be performed in concert on September 28th in Teatro Guimerá by the FIMUCITÉ Youth Orchestra, thanks to the collaboration of the game’s developers CD PROJEKT RED and the Film Music Festival of Kraków.
At 11:30 on Saturday, September 30th, our focus is still firmly on music for the videogame industry. The prolific composer and music producer Craig Stuart Garfinkle, who has worked in the music department of Blizzard on one of its most iconic games, ‘World of Warcraft’ will offer a class entitled "The Virtual Studio Instrument". This class will focus on how to get the most out of modern technologies and how to use them to optimize the quality and finish of musical works from the moment they are conceived right through to post-production, rendering, production and mixing.
At 14:00 on Saturday, September 30th, the composer and conductor Eímear Noone, who is the author of important works such as ‘World of Warcraft: Lords of Draenor’ will offer the master class "Conducting Video Game Recording Sessions". She will explore this topic and its peculiarities using a range of interactive videos, highlighting the differences between making recordings for films vs. video games.
In addition to these events, the FIMUCITÉ Film Scoring Academy will also be offering other activities that include matinee concerts in the Teatro Guimerá located in the capital city on September 27th and 28th: 'Soundtracks of Spain', performed by the Symphonic Band conducted by José Toledo and guest conductor Ramón García i Soler; and 'Warriors from the Silver Screen', performed by the FIMUCITÉ Youth Orchestra under José A. Cubas. Both the band and the orchestra are composed of students from the Canary Islands Higher Conservatory of Music and the Professional Conservatory of Music of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
These educational concerts will be narrated by Laura Escuela, an expert in narration for children. She will present and narrate the concerts to guarantee the educational component of these events and ensure that we offer our youngest audiences an interesting and enjoyable educational experience.
