On June 9th, the Cabildo de Tenerife played host to the presentation of the Tenerife International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ). The festival’s highlight this year will be the concert 'Stephen King’s Night Gallery' ('Galería Nocturna de Stephen King') performed by the Symphonic Orchestra of Tenerife on September 30th. The concert offers a collection of soundtracks from some of the best cinematographic adaptations of Stephen King’s novels to delight fans of film soundtracks, cinema, and fantastic literature.
FIMUCITÉ XI runs from September 22nd – 30th, 2017 thanks to the support and sponsorship of the Cabildo de Tenerife, the Canary Islands Government, Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, Arona City Council, and La Laguna City Council. The festival will present two original gems to thrill cinema and music fans: music from films by Quentin Tarantino and by Pedro Almodóvar. These concerts will be held at the Teatro Guimerá in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on September 23rd, and at Teatro Leal in La Laguna on September 24th.
The Insular Director of Culture and Education, José Luis Rivero, has tied the festival to Área Tenerife 2030, “because it shares creative values that are part and parcel of the island’s future”. He also remarks that the Cabildo de Tenerife has tripled its financial support for the festival, and that FIMUCITÉ helps to create bridges to other international festivals and record labels. Mr Luis Rivero also mentions its educational aspects. "The festival", he states, "is successful because of its bravery and the problem-solving skills of its organizers". The director of FIMUCITÉ, Diego Navarro, recalls that the tenth anniversary marked the end of an era, and that “now a new one is beginning; our goal it to continuously improve on what has come before and never let our standards of excellence fall”. With regards to what will be on offer, he revealed that the relationship between literature and music is the cornerstone of this year’s festival, in particular the fantasy genre. For this reason, the audience on closing night will be presented with the concert 'Stephen King’s Night Gallery'.
Conducted by Diego Navarro, the repertoire will include pieces composed by Pino Donaggio for ‘Carrie’, by Thomas Newman for ‘Shawshank Redemption’ (Oscar nominated in 1995) and ‘The Green Mile’ and by Richard Bellis, composer of the soundtrack for the television mini-series ‘IT’. Richard Bellis will attend the festival as our guest and shall be presenting the world premier of his musical work. The audience will also be treated to other world firsts in this concert: ‘Hearts In Atlantis, by Mychael Danna, ‘Pet Sematary’ by Elliot Goldenthal and ‘Secret Window by Philip Glass, among others. Pieces from the long awaited cinematographic versions of ‘IT’ and ‘The Dark Tower’ that were released this summer will also be performed.
The Festival’s director has also paid special mention to the strong role played by talented young musicians from the conservatories of music. The FIMUCITÉ Youth Orchestra, formed by students from the CSMC and the CPM of Santa Cruz under the direction of José Antonio Cubas, will offer a morning performance on Thursday 28th September for schools, and an evening performance for the general public at 20:00. The concert will offer the best of Hollywood’s epic films. The Symphonic Band of the Professional Conservatory of Music of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, under the direction of José Toledo, and Ramón García i Soler as guest conductor, will be performing a concert dedicated to music from Spanish cinema. It will include arrangements from films such as ‘¡Bienvenido Mr. Marshall!’ (‘Welcome Mr Marshall!’), ‘Capitán Trueno y el Santo Grial’ (‘Captain Thunder and the Holy Grail’) and ‘Atrapa la Bandera’ (‘Capture the flag’). Two performances will be offered on September 27th, a morning performance for schools and an evening performance for the general public at 20:00.
