- Tickets for Friday and Saturday’s concerts are sold out
This weekend at the Auditorio de Tenerife, the Festival Internacional de Música de Cine de Tenerife (FIMUCITÉ), created and directed by composer and conductor Diego Navarro, will host the sold out closing concerts of this, its nineteenth edition. The live-to-picture “Gladiator in Concert” will delight audiences on Friday and Saturday, at 7pm with the Sinfónica de Tenerife, conducted by Diego Navarro, with a live performance of the score composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard, in sync with a screening of Ridley Scott’s film, in English with Spanish subtitles.
The Sinfónica will be joined onstage by the official festival choir, the Tenerife Film Choir, conducted by Juan Ramón Vinagre, as well as the voices of the Coro Contemporáneo de Tenerife, conducted by Esther Wagenaar, and Coro EnArmonía, conducted by Miriam Luz Fumero Morales y Wagenaar. Also, Lisa Gerrard, the Gladiator score's original soloist, will join the musicians and choirs to perform iconic song “Now We Are Free” and the other solos on the score, as the main attraction of this year's edition of Fimucité, dedicated to Italy and its historical and cultural legacy.
The details were revealed at an event led by Diego Navarro, featuring the Vice President of the Island Council, Lope Afonso; the Island Counciller for Culture, José Carlos Acha; the General Director of Cultural Innovation for the Canary Islands Government, Cristóbal de la Rosa; the Counciller for Culture of Santa Cruz, Santiago Díaz; composer and soloist Lisa Gerrard; the founder and artistic director of the Roma Film Music Festival, Marco Patrigniani; and the director of the Krakow Music Festival, Agata Grabowiecka.
Lope Afonso stated that "Fimucité reaches the culmination of this edition, which manages to elevate the quality of the festival year after year. Lisa Gerrard's presence will be the biggest and best memory of this edition." The Vice President of the Island Council believes that "with this festival, we offer quality culture for a more conscious visitor." "You can come to Tenerife to relax, use our services, experience the cuisine, and also enjoy a varied culture for a different kind of leisure activity," added the Councilor for Tourism of the Island Council. "I want to elevate Fimucité from a festival to an event, because that is what it has become," concluded Afonso.
José Carlos Acha thanked Diego Navarro "for this festival, these international alliances, and for never throwing in the towel." "During this term, the Island Council's commitment to this festival has been firm," added the Island Councilor for Culture, who noted that "it's an initiative that democratises its activities in its variety of formats and also awakens a taste for classical music in a unique way."
Cristóbal de la Rosa wanted to highlight "two special interests: building networks with Krakow and Rome, and choosing an epic film at a time when we need to transcend to speak about the common good. The times show us a path, and we must follow it, even if it's difficult, from a political perspective as well".
For Tenerife Tourism CEO Dimple Melwani, this festival "contributes, through culture, to the development of the local cultural industry and the promotion of music, as well as to local development and participation, and to projecting an avant-garde and dynamic image of the island abroad. A festival sponsored by Tenerife Tourism that enriches the island's cultural offering with new features and activities for the enjoyment of young people and adults, residents and visitors, generating a unique and unforgettable experience." Melwani added that "Fimucité is much more than a music festival; it is a platform for culture and tourism, generating economic activity on the island and, in turn, a training and networking opportunity for composers and professionals in the audiovisual sector through the Film Scoring Academy."
Santiago Díaz highlighted "two important highpoints we've had this year: the concerts in Plaza de la Candelaria and Plaza del Príncipe." "We will continue promoting these street concerts, which have worked so well," added the Santa Cruz Councilor for Culture, who thanked Diego Navarro "as head of the Music School for being an inspiration as a Chicharrero, bringing a festival like this to these children."
Diego Navarro acknowledged that "it's been an extremely intense year of work, for five weeks of festival, making it the longest of all nineteen editions." The director recalled the timing of the theme choice, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the release of Ridley Scott's film. He also emphasised that there will be "160 musicians on stage, tackling an extremely difficult score, in which the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra is doing a sublime job."
Lisa Gerrard, co-writer and soloist of the film's soundtrack, said, "It's an honour to be in this wonderful and magical place. It's very special for me to be in a paradise island like this. Hans Zimmer, who sends his love, and I are very grateful that our music will be played here."
Marco Patrigniani acknowledged that “it's a pleasure to be able to offer the soul of Rome with this concert, here, featuring a legend like Lisa Gerrard. We had the opportunity to hear her at the Colosseum, and it's something I'll never forget. We are building strong partnerships between the three festivals (Tenerife, Rome, and Krakow) to offer the most powerful language of our time: film music.”
Agata Grabowiecka pointed out that “Fimucité is a great example that tourism and culture can work together. These types of events attract more and better visitors. Tourists are looking for quality experiences that offer excitement, and this is what we can offer them with our festivals.”
In partnership with CineConcerts, Gladiator in Concert promises a unique and immersive experience to celebrate the 25th anniversary of a legendary film, winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Audiences will be able to enjoy the feature film and its soundtrack performed live, in sync with the film's images, dialogue, and sound effects.
The live-to-picture format has become a highly anticipated cultural event for Fimucité audiences, fans of film and film music alike, since its debut in 2018 with sci-fi classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which featured writer Javier Sierra as presenter and star guest. In 2019, the festival revived Bram Stoker's Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, in co-production with the FMF Krakow. It returned to the 2024 edition with La La Land, conducted by two-time Oscar-winning composer Justin Hurwitz.
Fimucité Film Scoring Academy
Meanwhile, the Fimucité Film Scoring Academy (FFSA) programme, offered by the festival as part of its commitment to specialised training in audiovisual music creation, is entering its final stretch. This afternoon, at 5:00 PM, a talk with Lisa Gerrard will take place at the Espacio Cukltural CajaCanarias in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, moderated by prolific film music producer Robert Townson. Additionally, on Saturday at 12:00 PM, popular Segovian archaeologist, educator, and writer Néstor F. Marqués, a contributor to TVE and author of several successful books about Ancient Rome, will offer the immersive talk "Those Who Are NOT Going to Die, Salute You!"
The University of La Laguna, through the Vice-Rector's Office for Culture and University Outreach, will issue a certificate of attendance to all those who have attended at least 80% of the class hours of the Fimucité Film Music Academy program. Likewise, those who successfully complete the independent work required of students will receive a certificate of attendance and achievement, which will be recognised by an ECTS credit.
Also worthy of note is the presence at this nineteenth edition of FIMUCITÉ of Marco Patrigniani and Agata Grabowiecka, artistic directors respectively of the Roma Film Music Festival and the FMF, the Krakow Film Music Festival, which together with FIMUCITÉ, and in terms of Ancient Rome, form a renowned international triumvirate that enables artistic and productive collaboration between the three events.
