Lisa
Gerrard
With a vision and vocal style that is as singular as it is precise and enveloping, Lisa Gerrard has established herself as one of the most acclaimed film composers in the world, winning a Golden Globe for her work on the soundtrack of 'Gladiator' with Hans Zimmer.
Her musical career began in the early 1980s, when she formed the duo Dead Can Dance with fellow Australian Brendan Perry. In 2012, the band reunited for a successful sold-out world tour. With nine albums released between 1984 and 1995, the duo's musical universe expanded with each record, encompassing a timeless mix of world music influences, medieval chants, folk ballads, baroque styles, Celtic flavours, electronica, samplers and whatever other sonority captured their interest. Several solo albums and collaborations were well received, and Lisa made a natural progression into composing for film.
Lisa's film work includes Whale Rider, a film that received an Academy Award nomination and won her an international award for its score. In 2009, she composed the score for the critically acclaimed film 'Balibo', for which she won the 2009 Screen Music Award for Best Feature Film Score, an Aria Award and three additional nominations. In 2011, he completed the soundtrack for Burning Man, which won him the award for Best Soundtrack at the 2011 Australian Film Critics Circle Awards. In 2016, she collaborated with Marcello De Francisci on the soundtrack to the film Jane Got a Gun, directed by Gavin O'Connor and starring Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor.
Lisa has collaborated with James Orr on several soundtracks, including Paul Currie's 2016 thriller '2:22'. In 2017, they completed the music for West of Sunshine, which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. In 2019, they composed the soundtrack for the TV series 'Secret Bridesmaids' Business', which aired in Australia on Channel 7. The original soundtrack for the series was released by Air-Edel Records. More recently, Lisa collaborated with Lorenzo Esposito to co-compose and perform vocals on 100 Preludi, directed by Alessandra Pescetta. The film premiered at the Sguardi Altrove Film Festival in 2024.
Lisa's vocal performances continue to be heard around the world. She performed as part of 'Gladiator Live' at London's Royal Albert Hall in 2018 and as part of The World of Hans Zimmer - A Symphonic Celebration tour. Lisa and David Kuckhermann received a Grammy nomination for 'Best New Age Album' for Hiraeth, released by Besant Hall Records, a sub-label of Air-Edel Records, in August 2018. In 2021 and 2024, she was Featured Vocalist on the soundtracks for Dune and Dune: Part Two, directed by Denis Villeneuve, and Harry Gregson-Williams' Gladiator II.
