Fimucité remembers Antón García Abril with the voices of the Coro Polifónico de la ULL

- In addition, the Festival Internacional de Música de Cine de Tenerife offers, in collaboration with Filmoteca Canaria, film season ‘The Sound of the Spaghetti Western’.

The Festival Internacional de Música de Cine de Tenerife (FIMUCITÉ) in this 15th edition, celebrated this month with the support of Cabildo de Tenerife, Gobierno de Canarias, Ayuntamiento de San Cristóbal de La Laguna and Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, will remember Antón García Abril, one of the great Maestros of 20th Century Spanish music. The work of this renowned composer, who passed away last March at the age of 87, leaving behind a huge musical legacy, is the centrepiece for the concert scheduled for Thursday 23rd at the Exconvento de Santo Domingo, in La Laguna, as performed by the Coro Polifónico de la ULL.

Conducted by Julio Chinea Pedraza, and with the participation of Emiko Morimoto (piano) and Samuel Delgado (guitar), the scheduled repertoire will celebrate his unforgettable film scores, with standouts such as ‘Los camioneros’ and ‘La colmena’, by Mario Camus, ‘El crimen de Cuenca’, by Pilar Miró, or comedy ‘Sor Citroen’, by Pedro Lazaga. His work in genres such as the spaghetti western or Spanish fantaterror will be represented by titles such as ‘Adiós, Texas’, ‘La noche del terror ciego’, ‘La noche de Walpurgis’ or ‘Dr. Jekyll y el hombre lobo’.

Also, we will hear soundtracks that have made history on Spanish television, such as ‘Anillos de oro’ or ‘Fortunata y Jacinta’, as well as the legendary documentary series ‘El hombre y la tierra’ starring Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente.

Many of the pieces chosen for this occasion will be performed for the first time offscreen, in a performance in which over half of the music has never before been performed in a concert hall. To this end, composer, arranger and orchestrator Jorge Magaz (‘Open Windows’, ‘La mirada de Ouka Leele’) has arranged all the material designed by the musician for choir, alongside Miguel Ángel Órdoñez y Julio Chinea.

Thus, FIMUCITÉ pays tribute, on this special anniversary, to Maestro Antón García Abril, whose name adorns the Festival´s honorary award, won by the great, much-loved man himself in 2014.

‘The Sound of the Spaghetti Western’ Season
The film subgenre “spaghetti western”, which shone brightest in the 1960s and 70s, and its soundtracks will take centre stage in a season of screenings that make up part of the parallel activity programme of this, the 15th edition of FIMUCITÉ, thanks to the collaboration of Filmoteca Canaria.

Under the banner ‘The Sound of the Spaghetti Western’, we will discover the indispensable nature of compositions by creators such as Oscar-winner Ennio Morricone, Luis Bacalov, brothers Guido and Maurizio De Angelis or Spanish composer Antón García Abril, who developed a new language that revolutionised film music, introducing sounds unheard until then, such as whistles, gunshots or the peeling of bells.

The programme kicks off on the 14th with 'The Return of Ringo', by Duccio Tessari, in Teatro Guiniguada de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Also, the screenings will be available for your enjoyment throughout September and October in Espacio Cultural La Granja, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and at Casa de los Coroneles, in La Oliva, Fuerteventura.

The season also offers film-goers the chance to discover, or enjoy on the big screen for the first time, classics such as 'Texas, Adios', 'Death at Owell Rock', 'Keoma' and 'Django'.
