Fimucité 13 film series examines vampire mythology

The Tenerife International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ), runs from 20th – 29th September thanks to the support and sponsorship of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, the Canary Islands Government and Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council. This year, as part of the parallel activities programed for the 13th edition of the festival, a film series dedicated to vampire mythology will be screened under the title “The Vampire’s Reflection” / “El Reflejo del Vampiro”. The screenings, in collaboration with Filmoteca Canaria, will be held in September and October in Teatro Guiniguada de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and in La Granja Espacio de Creación, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. All screenings start at 19.00 p.m. and films will be shown in original version with Spanish subtitles.

On Tuesday 17th September, the Teatro Guiniguada begins the film cycle screenings with the film ‘Dracula’ (1931), by George Melford, which is based on the novel by Bram Stoker. This Spanish language film offers an alternative take on the classic version starring Bela Lugosi. It was shot throughout the night at the same time as the English language version using the same studio sets as Tod Browning’s team once Browning and his team had finished their day’s shooting. Audiences can catch the black and white film on the 19th July in La Granja Espacio de Creación, a space reopened after 10 years following recent remodelling and refurbishments.

On Tuesday 24th September, the film series continues in Las Palmas with 'Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht' (1979), by Werner Herzog, a new adaptation of the German production of the famous novel that used the German expressionism classic directed by F.W. Murnau in 1922 as its reference point. Two days later, on Sept 26th the film will be screened in Tenerife.

On 1st October film screenings continue in the Teatro Guiniguada with 'The Addiction' (1995), a cult black and white film by Abel Ferrara starring Lily Taylor and Christopher Walken. The film, which can be seen in Tenerife on Thursday 3rd October, is considered an allegory of struggles with drug addiction.

The next phase on the 8th Oct (Teatro Guiniguada) and 10th Oct (La Granja), will be dedicated to ‘Interview with the Vampire’ (1994), a film starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst and Antonio Banderas and directed by Neil Jordan using a script by Anne Rice that is based on her novel by the same name. The composer Elliot Goldenthal received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score for this iconic film.

On Tuesday 15th October in Guiniguada, and on Thursday 17th in Tenerife, FIMUCITÉ and Filmoteca Canaria will be bringing audiences the dark and glamorous film ‘The Hunger’ (1983), by Tony Scott, which is based on the novel of the same name by Whitley Strieber. The film’s star-studded cast includes David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. Its remarkable film score includes original music by Michel Rubini and Denny Jaeger, songs composed by Bauhaus and Iggy Pop, and also classical pieces.

The film chosen to close the series on the 22nd and 24th October in Gran Canaria and Tenerife, respectively, is ‘Dracula’ (1979), by John Badham, which is based on a play by Hamilton Deane & John L. Balderston in which Count Dracula was performed by Frank Langella and Van Helsing by Laurence Olivier. Given its elements of extreme Romanticism, the film is markedly different from other vampire films that come both before and after. It is also accompanied by the exceptional musical score by John Williams, which is undoubtedly one of his best works.

Live-to-picture concert: ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’
The Tenerife International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ) will be thrilling audiences with a live-to-picture concert for the film ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ on Saturday 28th September at 19.00 in the Auditorio de Tenerife. Under the baton of conductor Diego Navarro, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife and the Tenerife Film Choir will perform the film score by Polish composer Wojciech Kilar in perfect synchrony with the onscreen images from this iconic score from the vampire genre. This original performance has been coproduced with the Krakow Film Music Festival (FMF) in collaboration with Sony Pictures.

FIMUCITÉ 13 is directed by the composer and orchestra conductor Diego Navarro, and is made possible thanks to the support and sponsorship of the Cabildo de Tenerife, the Canary Islands Government, Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, Audi Canarias, Dorada Especial and the Teleférico del Teide, and the collaboration of SGAE – the Spanish General Society of Authors and Publishers, amongst others.
