Homenaje a Antón García Abril

The strong link one of the greatest Maestros of 20th Century Spanish music had (and continues to have) with FIMUCITÉ is known by everyone. The most important award our Festival presents carries his name, after all. FIMUCITÉ will forever be indebted to García Abril, the musician, but it also owes a lot to García Abril, the person. His affection and support for our Festival has always been felt, and, as a result, the bonds that join us are unbreakable.

It goes without saying that his passing last March has been an irreparable loss for the Festival. FIMUCITÉ has lost Antón, the person, forever. Nevertheless, Antón, the musician, lives on with us, as he always has done, since Day 1. For all of the above, that FIMUCITÉ would use the 2021 edition of its Festival to pay tribute to the Maestro was beyond question.

For Antón, choral music was always an important component of his musical production. On the other hand, in FIMUCITÉ, we have always promoted one of the most popular facets of this incredible composer: his scores for Spanish cinema over four decades, with over 200 finished works. In an attempt to unite both concepts, FIMUCITÉ is proud to present, in its 50th edition, a choral concert in which some of Antón´s most important works for Spanish cinema will be performed.

This fantastic event marks the first time many of the chosen pieces will be heard live, as opposed to onscreen. A unique concert, in a unique venue (Exconvento de Santo Domingo), in which over 50% of the compositions will be performed in concert for the very first time. To this end, composer, arranger and orchestrator Jorge Magaz (La mirada de Ouka Lele, Open Windows) has taken it upon himself to arrange this work for a choir, a task both arduous and gratifying, in equal measure, that will allow the audience to witness the impressive legacy that Antón García Abril, film musician, has gifted to screens both big and small throughout this country.
