Europäische FilmPhilharmonie Creative Director

Fernando Carmena

Fernando Carmena is Creative Director of the Europäische FilmPhilharmonie and cultural worker specialized in dramaturgy, writing, education and video-making.

After several years freelancing for the Teatro Real and the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid, Fernando moved to Berlin attracted by the FilmPhiharmonie’s involvement in productions such as Metropolis, The Matrix Live and Frank Strobel’s recordings of the music of Sergei Prokofiev and Alfred Schnittke.

His fascination with music and films started as an avid concertgoer and soundtrack collector and continued as Film Music scholar and concert dramaturg. After studying a MA in Art History, he qualified as Pedagogue and studied Performing Arts Management and Master of Advanced Studies in Film History with a focus on the links between concert culture and film culture.

This background is central to several FilmPhilharmonic productions under his creative direction: KING KONG – THE FILM SYMPHONY (2019), WITH A SMILE: CHARLIE CHAPLIN IN CONCERT (2019), ATTACK ON TITAN: THE LIVE EXPERIENCE (2020), THE PLANETS (2019) and LUTHER, A REFORMATION (2017), both in collaboration with video artist Lillevan, HUNTING 007 or ONCE UPON A TIME ENNIO MORRICONE (2021) developed in cooperation with Fimucité.

Fernando has contributed to several books and magazines (Film Score Monthly, Secuencias, Caimán Cuadernos de Cine...) and participated in numerous international Film Music conferences and seminars. This Summer 2021 he was invited to inaugurated the newly created Film Studies Chair of the University of Oviedo with the Seminar “The elective affinities: musicians and filmmakers between monogamy and polyamory”.

As dramaturg and director, he has created several shows based on a contemporary and unorthodox approach to the musical genre of Spanish Zarzuela. These include “Bewitched Zarzuelas with Segundo de Chomón”, in collaboration with electronic musician Kevin Toma, and the acclaimed “Barbián: Zarzuela-Kabarett”, in cooperation with queer artist Rodrigo Cuevas, premiered at Veranos de la Villa Festival (2019) and the Teatro de la Zarzuela (2020) in Madrid, and reaching Primavera Sound in Barcelona next Summer 2022.
