Coro Polifónico Universitario of La Laguna
The “Coro Polifónico de la Universidad de La Laguna” was founded in 1983 and is a symbol of this institution transcending traditional university. Along the years it has gathered the best members and choir masters to ensure its versatility and artistic quality.
Among the symphonic-choral repertoire that this group has performed, we must highlight King Arthur (H. Purcell), The Messiah (Haendel), The Creation and The Seasons (Haydn), Ein Deutches Requiem (Brahms), Gloria (Vivaldi), Symphony No. 9 “Coral” (LV Beethoven), Te Deum (Dvorak), Messe de Requiem (G. Fauré), Misa de Requiem (Verdi), Misa de Requiem, The Rapture in the Seraglio, Coronation Mass and The Great Mass (Mozart), Carmen (Bizet), Daphnis et Chloé (M.Ravel), La Vida Breve (M. Falla), Carmina Burana (Carl Orff), Te Deum (Z. Kodaly), Symphony No. 2 (F. Mendelssohn) , Misa Nelson (Haydn), Symphony No. 2 (G. Mahler), Iván El Terrible (S. Prokofiev) and Misa Tango (Luis Vacalov).
The Coro Polifónico has been a regular collaborator of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, both in FIMUCITÉ (The Tenerife International Film Music Festival) and in the Canary Islands Music Festivals (1987 and 1996), in the Tenerife Opera Festival, and in the extraordinary Christmas concerts held in the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (1994-2002, 2007 and 2016), having participated in the 2008 -2018 editions of the Concert organized by La Caixa with the Handel’s Messiah and in June 2011 with the Great Mass in Do Minor by Mozart, in the Tenerife’s Auditorium.
The Coro Polifónico has performed with renowned orchestras, such as the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, the Gran Canaria Philharmonic, the Palma de Mallorca Symphony, the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, the Young National Orchestra of Spain, the London Young Symphony Orchestra, Landesjugendorchester Nordrheinwestfallen and the Virtuosos de Moscow . It has also been conducted by prestigious batons, as Vladimir Spivakov, Víctor Pablo Pérez, Edmon Colomer, Laszlo Helthay, Eric Ericsson, Antoni Ros Marbá, James Blair, Sabas Calvillo , Howard Williams, Oriol Martorell, Pierre Cao, Javier Corcuera, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Lluis Vila, Robert King, Javier Busto, Diego Navarro, Jordi Casas, Jonathan Webb.
The Coro Polifónico has recorded many discs paying tribute to classical repertoire and folklore, highlighting the soundtrack for "Time Gate", a soundtrack composed by Diego Navarro for this animated film with drawings by Mingote, and has premiered and recorded works by contemporary composers (Armando Alfonso, Enrique Guimerá, Gustavo Trujillo, Rafael Estévez, Lothar Siemens, Luis Cobiella and Sergio Rodríguez).
This choir enjoys a magnificent record of awards in both national and international competitions, we can highlight: 2nd Prize in the Polyphony modality and Silver Diploma in the Folklore modality (Grand Prix of Slovakia, July 1997), 2nd Prize and Gold Award (Eighth International Competition of Budapest, April 2001), First National Prize in the City of Torrevieja (Torrevieja International Choir Competition, July 2002 and July 2006), First Prize in the contest and First Rosa Ma. Tarruel Special Prize (XXIV International City of Avilés Competition, November 2007) and Second National Prize (Competition Torrevieja Choir International, July 2009). In June 2010, it became first at the V Choral Contest of Rivas, Madrid and in November 2010, it was selected to participate in the XXX Fira de Tots Sants Choral Contest, Cocentaina, Alicante.
Finally, in March 2011 he participated as a choir invited by the Federation of Choirs of Navarra to participate in the II Berrioplano State Choir Contest, where he won the 3rd Prize for Folklore, the 2nd Prize for Polyphony and the prize for the best performance
The Coro Polifónico Universitario celebrates an average of 30 concerts a year and has included some innovative ones such as “Always Broadway”, “From cold fire” among others receiving great reviews.
Since 2015 Julio Chinea Pedraza is the official Choir Master.
