Born in the city of Dordrecht in Holland in 1985, Matthijs pretty soon discovered he had an affection towards music.
He started playing the cello but switched to bass guitar at the age of 9. Since his interest in music had become more and more intense, he enrolled in a special high school that was combined with a pre-conservatory education. At the age of 18 he stopped pursuing his career as a bass player and started focusing on composition.
It was the combination of cinema and music that led him to pursue a career as a film composer. Despite only a couple of Dutch directors and cinematographers such as Paul Verhoeven & Jan de Bont, there weren’t many Dutch people in the top film industry. That fact given turned out to become a great stimulator in finding his own, probably European flavored, artistic voice. Due to the lack of film music programs at conservatories in Holland and Europe, Matthijs decided to focus on self studying.
In 2010, after scoring about 4 drama series, Matthijs scored his first feature film 'Fuchsia the Mini-Witch', and also had his first chance to work with full symphonic orchestra. This project was a confirmation for him: this was what he wanted to do. In 2010 Matthijs went to Los Angeles to participate in a Film Music Orchestration course given by well-known orchestrator Scott Smalley.
In 2011 Matthijs won the Polish “Transatlantyk Film Music Competition” founded by Academy Award-winning composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. Matthijs got 1st place and title of “Transatlantyk Young Composer for 2011”.
2013 turned out to be a successful year as well. Matthijs composed the score for the Dutch Movie 'Loving Ibiza', on which he collaborated with internationally acclaimed DJ Armin van Buuren. For this score they were Awarded with the BUMA Soundtrack of the Year Award. It was the most visited Dutch movie of 2013.
In 2013 in Krakow, at the Film Music Festival, Matthijs was awarded the prestigious “Young Talent Award”. Together with Hollywoods finest, Matthijs's music was played live by the National Polish Orchestra at the Gala-Concert, in front of 5000 people.
In 2015 Matthijs will be assisting FMF’s well known conductor and composer Diego Navarro on the movie 'Capture The Flag' as orchestrator and additional composer, as well as composing for various Dutch feature films and TV shows.
