The Festival Internacional de Música de Cine de Tenerife (FIMUCITÉ), the oldest event of its kind in the world, founded and directed by composer and conductor Diego Navarro, comes of age with a new edition that will amaze film and music fans, thanks to the support of the Cabildo de Tenerife and Turismo de Tenerife as main sponsors, along with the Ayuntamientos of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de La Laguna and Gobierno de Canarias, among other public and private entities. The theme chosen for this edition, which will take place between July 5th and 20th, is musicals and their legendary film adaptations.

Since talkies entered the movie arena, the musical has been an integral part of cinema history, with memorable classics such as 'The Wizard of Oz' (1939), 'Singin' in the Rain' (1952), 'West Side Story' (1961) or ' Cabaret' (1972). Furthermore, in recent years we have witnessed a rebirth with new and applauded offerings, with standouts such as 'Moulin Rouge' (2001), 'LA LA LAND' (2016) or 'The Greatest Showman' (2017). FIMUCITÉ pays tribute to this genre that has fueled the dreams of Hollywood in its eighteenth edition, through its programme of concerts and parallel activities.
This celebration of the musical will feature an exceptional guest: Justin Hurwitz, the composer of the score for 'La La Land', for which he was awarded with two Oscars, for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ('City of Stars', award shared with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul). The acclaimed scorer of other films such as 'Whiplash', 'First Man' or 'Babylon' will lead the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife in one of the programme's key concerts.

To warm up, the Festival with kick off with a summer film series, with free admission, which, this time, will take place in the Residencial Anaga square in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The public will be able to enjoy outdoor screenings of iconic musicals 'Mamma Mía', 'West Side Story' and 'The Phantom of the Opera', on the evenings of July 5th, 6th and 7th. This is an initiative organised with the support of the Concejalía del Distrito Centro-Ifara of the island's capital City Council and with the collaboration of Fundación Disa.

On Friday, July 12th, La Laguna will host an original opening concert that will turn the Teatro Leal into the 'FIMUCITÉ CABARET', with Atelier de Musique, a band of 7 excellent musicians led by  extraordinary saxophonist Kike Perdomo, who will be joined by The Vintage Experience, a trio of brilliant singers specialized in retro music. Perdomo is preparing exclusive arrangements based on iconic songs from emblematic musicals such as 'Cabaret', 'Moulin Rouge', 'Chicago' or 'Burlesque', which will premiere in this show.

After ten years of continued success making the Teatro Guimerá de Santa Cruz de Tenerife dance, on Saturday, July 13th, the Pop Culture Band, made up of 15 members under the excellent musical direction and exclusive arrangements of Gonzalo de Araoz, is renewing its offering within FIMUCITÉ with the concert 'DON'T STOP BELIEVING!'. The program will offer songs from legendary musicals and biopics of legendary musicians and bands such as 'Fame', 'Grease', 'Mamma Mía', 'Rocketman', 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'La Bamba', 'Yesterday', 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' and other essential titles.

The film, which won 6 Oscars from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, including best soundtrack and song for composer Justin Hurwitz, became a global phenomenon and relaunched the musical as a film genre. A new "live-to-picture" experience, after the success in past editions of the concerts dedicated to 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', where writer and journalist Javier Sierra participated as presenter and special guest, and to 'Bram Stoker's Dracula', in co-production with the Krakow Film Music Festival. The extraordinary Polo Ortí, the greatest exponent of jazz piano in the Canary Islands, will be the main soloist of this concert.

This educational event will offer the opportunity to listen to the Festival's guests, who will give master classes focused on the genre of musicals and the processes of composition and song writing. These sessions, which will take place on the afternoons of Wednesday, July 17th and Thursday, July 18th in the cultural space of Fundación CajaCanarias, will be open to the general public and will offer the possibility of opting for university credits.

In addition, at the beginning of July, FIMUCITÉ will present a number of sessions aimed at young audiences in the style of a "summer camp", an approach to music for cinema for schoolchildren who are starting their summer holidays. The programme includes different activities in which they will be able to experience first-hand, and in a playful way, the importance of music in audiovisual media and musical theater.
