Composer & Principal Orchestra Conductor
Born in Tenerife in 1972, Diego Navarro performed his first composition at the age of 13, aged 21 he conducted his first orchestra.
Navarro is one of the most renowned composers in Spanish film music today. He composes, orchestrates and conducts his scores with enormous versatility, having performed all genres. Recently, Navarro has worked on: the multi award-winning ‘Atrapa la Bandera’ (Capture the Flag) directed by Enrique Gato, Goya for Best Animation Film, released and distributed internationally by Paramount Pictures; and the drama ‘Pasaje al Amanecer’ (Passage to Dawn) by Andrés Castro. Both projects obtained excellent reviews and nominations such as the prestigious World Soundtrack Awards, Ghent Film Fest, for ‘Pasaje al Amanecer’.
Navarro’s most recent score, is the biopic and war drama ‘El Fotógrafo de Mauthausen’ (The Mauthausen Photographer). The film, featuring Spanish star Mario Casas, directed by Mar Targarona and based on true events, tells the story of Francesc Boix, a Spanish photographer imprisoned in the Nazi concentration camp of Mauthausen. Boix manages to hide the negatives of photos later used to indict Nazi leaders during the Nuremberg trials. The movie will be premiered in cinemas in October the 26th 2018.
His music and performances as an orchestra conductor have been released by the prestigious film soundtrack record label Varèse Sarabande and Quartet Records, among others. Navarro has also been guest conductor for the Paris Symphonic Orchestra (PSO), the Krakow Symphony Orchestra, the Aukso Orchestra, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Golden State Pop Orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Málaga, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Beethoven Academy Orchestra, among others. In November 2018, he will conduct the Royal Scottish National Orchestra & Choir for the Varèse Sarabande 40th anniversary concerts.
Navarro is the founder and director of FIMUCITÉ, the internationally recognized Tenerife International Film Music Festival (www.fimucite.com), which celebrates its twelfth year in 2018.
In his role as orchestra conductor, Navarro has conducted a great number of world premieres of big Hollywood and European blockbusters that were arranged especially for the FIMUCITÉ festival, most notably the Universal Pictures Studios historic Centennial Concert, the American Society of Composers Authors & Publishers (ASCAP) 100th Anniversary Concert, and the DreamWorks Animation Studios Tribute Concert.
Amongst his repertoire as orchestra conductor, Diego Navarro has a wealth of experience working with great film music composers, and conducting scores by Bernard Herrmann, Alex North, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Patrick Doyle, George Delerue, Maurice Jarre, Howard Shore, Elliot Goldenthal, Christopher Young, Michael Giacchino, Bruno Coulais, Alexander Desplat, Phillipe Sarde and Antón García Abril.
In addition to working as a film music composer, orchestra conductor, and director of FIMUCITÉ, Navarro regularly collaborates as guest conductor at the Krakow Film Music Festival (FMF). In 2015, the FMF awarded Navarro the FMF Ambassador Award, for “His great involvement in the knowledge and popularization of film music, his cooperation between both festivals and the creation of new audiovisual projects of international relevance”. In the words of Izabela Helbin (Director of the Krakow Festivals Office), “This award is in recognition of the special role Diego Navarro has played in the popularization and development of knowledge of film music and his contribution to the development of this important sector of the audiovisual industry”
